Heal LA’s Impact Areas: Self-Care & Education

As the Heal Los Angeles Foundation continue this amazing journey, we would like to take a moment to provide some clarity and dispel a common misconception. While our origins as a student service organization at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) focused on addressing homelessness, hunger, and child abuse, we have since evolved into an official 501c3 nonprofit organization with a renewed mission and focus.

The Heal Los Angeles Foundation’s current mission is to improve the lives of young people in Greater Los Angeles by creating impactful programs that help them pursue their dreams while building fundamental life skills. Our work is centered around two key impact areas: “Self-Care” and “Education.”

Self-Care

We firmly believe that learning about self-care is crucial for youth as it empowers them to prioritize their physical, emotional, and mental well-being. By cultivating self-care practices, young individuals develop healthy coping mechanisms, resilience, and stress management skills. It also fosters self-awareness and encourages the cultivation of healthy boundaries, leading to improved overall health and a strong foundation for personal growth and success in adulthood.

Under our “Self-Care” impact area, we offer two programs: Power Up Fitness and our Mental Health Program. These programs provide opportunities for youth to engage in physical activities, learn about nutrition, and gain essential mental health support and resources.

Education

We recognize the paramount importance of education in equipping youth with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to navigate the complexities of the world and achieve their full potential. By fostering a love for learning, education cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and a strong desire for knowledge, empowering young individuals to adapt, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to society. It also opens doors to opportunities, expands horizons, and promotes personal growth, enabling youth to shape their own futures and make informed decisions that positively impact their lives and communities.

Currently, our “Education” impact area includes the Virtual Cooking Class program, where participants learn culinary skills while exploring different cultures and cuisines. We are excited to announce that Heal LA is actively developing additional programs to expand our educational offerings. These forthcoming programs will focus on financial literacy, career exploration, and resilience-building in the face of failure.

Future Programs and Initiatives

We are committed to creating programs and initiatives that truly meet the needs of the youth we serve. Our program development process is rooted in extensive research and feedback from the community. We rely on a multi-faceted approach that involves pre and post surveys, focus groups with students, parents, and faculty from local schools, and firsthand observations by our dedicated staff.

By actively listening to the voices of those directly impacted, we gain valuable insights into the challenges they face and their aspirations. This allows us to design programs that are tailored to their unique needs, ensuring their relevance and effectiveness. We believe in the power of collaboration and continuously seek input from all stakeholders involved, enabling us to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the youth we serve.
